Low Carb Diets
There were quite a few years that we were all caught up in low carb diets. If we weren't on one our self we were doing our best to cut out at least a portion of our carb intake. Little by little it became almost a given that we should all be taking care not to eat too many carbs. Eventually we were convinced that all carbs are inherently bad and the only way to go is on one of the low carb diets that we could no longer ignore.
Rethinking low carb diets
We could see the effect of the low carb diet craze most easily at the supermarket, where whole aisles sprang up containing nothing but low carb food endorsed by one or other of the low carb diets. And because we are always looking for the easiest way out of anything as well as the easiest way to do things, low carb food was met with great enthusiasm, and flew off the shelves. That was until people tasted the stuff, most of which was an abomination at best, not to mention that very little of it was any good for you. A large part of the appeal of low carb diets was that many took it as a goo-ahead to eat all of the bacon (and similar such foods) that their hearts desired. Wasn't anyone thinking about the long term? How on earth could many of these low carb diets actually be beneficial. Are people so wrapped up in losing a few quick pounds (that they will gain back) that they will accept any means by which to pull it off, with complete disregard to their overall health? Did we really believe that we could live a healthy existence without any exercise? It just goes to show how adept we all are at shutting out the obvious in order to make a fantasy closer to reality, but reality always rears its ugly head again.
Now that the craze and the delirium has subsided it is much easier to see that very reality and it does not look very good for many of the low carb diets. If we want to lose weight and keep it off for good we have to make lifestyle changes, crash diets do not work and they never will, unless your plan is too gain more weight back after you resume your regular eating habits. Sorry to have to be the bearer of such tough news, but we have to change the way that we are living in regards to diet and exercise - that is the only way to keep off those unwanted pounds. A low carb diet, or at least a lower carb diet is better for us, but only if we are eating the right kinds of carbs.
